Simon is a minor antagonist in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. A skilled member of Expedition Zero and an old friend of Verso, Simon unknowingly became a pawn in the conflict between the Paintress and the Curator. Manipulated by who he thought to be his love, he was for a long time the only being who ever defeated an Axon.

His desperate quest for saving Clea led him into a direct confrontation with the one who threatened the very existence of the Canvas, a fight that Simon ultimately lost. He has remained trapped in the depths of the Abyss ever since, forgotten by all.

The ultimate challenge faced by Expedition 33, he serves as a secret superboss who can be found in Renoir's Drafts from Act III onwards, with a minimum recommended level of 90. Beating him will reward Verso and Gustave with Simoso, along with two Perfect Chroma Catalysts and fifty Colours of Lumina.

Simon was part of the very first expedition that set out to the Monolith, led by Renoir, from Lumière. He was in love with Renoir's daughter, Clea.

At some point, Clea was abducted by the real Clea Dessendre and trapped somewhere inside the Canvas, where Simon would never be able to reach her. The real Clea then used Simon's grief to manipulate him. She whispered lies into Simon's ear and that he had been chosen to restore balance. She bestowed upon him the strength to fell the Axons, so that he could obtain the power necessary to break the Barrier that guarded the Monolith. With this new power, he felled the Axon known as The Hauler in Old Lumière, and obtained its power.

When approaching the Monolith with the Axon's power, he was unable to break the Barrier, and realized he had been deceived by Clea. Broken, and nearly lost to despair, Simon wandered the edges of the Monolith until he was approached by the Curatress. She would tell Simon that it was not yet too late and that there was a way for him to free painted Clea, and instructed him to descend down to the Monoliths depths and face the true danger, the Curator who enacts the Gommage.

Upon battling with the Curator, Simon was finding it harder and harder to resist the Curator's influence over his mind, and eventually lost, causing himself to be trapped inside the Abyss and setting the Curator free.

Simon's encounter in the Abyss is a three-phased fight split into two battles. The second phase begins once Simon is first defeated and he proceeds to resist his erasure from the Canvas, causing him to be reborn with new power and his sword Simoso to grow even bigger. Once his health is reduced to 30% or less, he will enter his final phase and instantly erase the entire party, forcing the remaining members of Expedition 33 to face him.

Each phase change also evolves his moveset. In his second phase Simoso is much bigger and emits a single afterimage that mimics Simon's swings and deals as much damage as the real sword. By the final phase, Simoso turns red and emits two afterimages per swing, effectively tripling Simon's attacks and damage.

Attacks[]

All Phases
  • Simon performs a short combo: Single target. Simon leaps towards his target and makes two overhead swings, then unleashes a horizontal wave of Chroma that has to be jumped, and finishes with a massive leap and one last downwards slash. Can hit 4 times in phase 1, then 8 in 2 and finally 12 in 3.
  • Simon performs a long combo: Single target. Simon leaps towards his target and roars, then unleashes a flurry of six swings from Simoso. Can hit 6 times in phase 1, then 12 in 2 and finally 18 in 3.
  • Simon performs a powerful combo: Single target. Simon swings Simoso upwards, then makes a second upwards swing and finishes with a diagonal slash. Hits 3 times in phase 1, 6 in 2 and 9 in 3.
  • Simon gathers Chroma: Single target. Simon plants Simoso in the ground to his right, then uses his hand to crush his target with Chroma, reducing their health to 1. It cannot be blocked nor dodged.
Phase 1 only
  • Simon plants his sword in the ground: Single target. Simon plants Simoso in the ground to his left, then unleashes a flurry of punches with his arm. First he leaps and does a slam attack, then a backhand swing, an uppercut, then leaps backwards to throw a strong cross, and a final leap and right hook.
Phases 2 and 3
  • Simon swings at light speed: Party-wide. Simon swings Simoso at extreme speeds, unleashing a flurry of slashes that finishes with him aiming his sword upwards and summoning a massive blade from the ground to impale the entire party. Hits 10 times.
  • The Sword of Lumière is attacking: Single target. Simon raises Simoso and infuses it with Chroma, and unleashes a barrage of horizontal swings, finishing with a blast of Chroma from the skies. Hits 7 times.

Phase 3 only
  • The Expedition is removed from the Canvas: Party-wide. Simon stabs the sky, which makes Simoso crackle with red lightning and unleashes a blood-red shockwave. Then he stomps the ground and instantly gommages the entire party, forcing the reserve team members to face him. If the reserve team is unavailable, this attack will instantly fail the Expedition. It activates once Simon's health is reduced to 30% and his turn begins. It cannot be blocked nor dodged. The only way to bypass the attack is to keep Simon from entering his third phase, whether by stunlocking him or instantly killing him before he can fight back.

Abilities[]

All Phases
